How it works
The CBE grading system, explained
Competency Based Education grades every learning area on four bands, each split in two: Exceeding Expectations (EE1, EE2), Meeting Expectations (ME1, ME2), Approaching Expectations (AE1, AE2) and Below Expectations (BE1, BE2). Each level carries points, from 8 for EE1 to 1 for BE2.
The overall result is the mean of the learning area marks, graded on the same levels. CBE does not rank learners, so positions are off by default in Msingi; a school can switch them on.
What are the CBE achievement levels?
EE1 (90 to 100%), EE2 (75 to 89%), ME1 (58 to 74%), ME2 (41 to 57%), AE1 (31 to 40%), AE2 (21 to 30%), BE1 (11 to 20%) and BE2 (0 to 10%), with points from 8 down to 1.
What is the difference between CBC and CBE?
CBE (Competency Based Education) is the name the curriculum has taken as it reaches Senior School. The achievement levels are the same eight.
Do CBE report cards show positions?
Not by default, because CBE does not rank learners. Msingi lets a school switch positions on if it wants them.
Can a school change the ranges?
Yes. In Msingi the boundaries are set in Settings, and every marksheet and report card follows them.
Msingi does this for every learner
Teachers enter marks once. Grades, means, positions and the report card for a whole class come out, the way Kenya schools print them.
